Simple Putting Drills

Putting is often referred to as the most crucial aspect of golf. It requires precision, touch, and finesse. However, many golfers struggle with their putting skills and are left frustrated on the greens. The good news is that by incorporating a few simple putting drills into your practice routine, you can improve your consistency, accuracy, and overall confidence on the putting surface. In this article, we will explore some effective and straightforward putting drills that can take your game to the next level.

Putting Green

The Gate Drill
The gate drill is an excellent exercise for enhancing your putting accuracy and alignment. All you need to get started is two alignment sticks or any straight objects that can serve as markers. Place the sticks in parallel, forming a narrow "gate" about a putter head's width apart, just a few feet in front of the ball. The objective is to roll the ball through the gate without hitting the sticks. By repeatedly attempting this drill, you'll develop a more consistent putting stroke, promote a square clubface at impact, and improve your ability to start the ball on the intended line.

Distance Control Drill
Distance control is a critical aspect of successful putting. To improve your feel for distance, set up a series of markers at different distances from the hole (e.g., 10 feet, 20 feet, 30 feet). Start by putting from the shortest distance and gradually work your way back. The goal is to develop a sense of how much power is needed to roll the ball a specific distance. Focus on maintaining a smooth and rhythmic stroke, paying attention to the length of your backswing and follow-through. Clock Drill

Imagine the hole as the center of a clock face, and place six tees or markers around it at the 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o'clock positions. Begin at the 3-foot mark (12 o'clock) and attempt to sink putts consecutively from each position. Only move on to the next spot if you successfully hole the putt. This drill helps you refine your stroke and instills a sense of pressure as you progress further away from the hole. It also improves your ability to read and adapt to different breaks.

One-Handed Putting Drill
The one-handed putting drill is a fantastic exercise for refining your putting stroke and promoting a smoother, more controlled action. Start by gripping the putter with just your lead hand (left hand for right-handed golfers and vice versa). Place your other hand behind your back or on your waist. By relying on one hand, you'll develop a heightened sense of touch and improve your ability to control the clubface throughout the stroke. This drill also helps eliminate any unnecessary wrist movement and encourages a more pendulum-like motion.

Random Target Drill
Putting under pressure is a crucial aspect of the game, and the random target drill helps simulate that scenario. Set up multiple tee markers or objects (such as coins) at different distances and angles around the practice green. Randomly choose a target before each putt and attempt to hole it. By constantly changing the target and introducing variability, this drill challenges your ability to adapt to different situations and increases your mental focus. It also prepares you for the unpredictability of on-course putting.
